Overview

An integral part of a successful dental practice, dental assistants aid the in-office dentist or dental hygienist by performing a variety of tasks throughout a patient’s visit.

Present at each stage of the appointment, the responsibilities of a dental assistant vary greatly and can range from pre-appointment clerical work such as greeting patients, scheduling future appointments, and gathering dental history to more hands-on duties like performing x-rays or creating laboratory molds.

Almost all dental assistants work in dentists’ offices.

  • We recommend using either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for your internet browser if you have any issues with internet Explorer
  • Super VGA (1024 x 768) or higher-resolution video adapter with 128MB VRAM and monitor. The latest versions Macromedia Flash player and Shockwave player plug-ins for Internet browser (Firefox doesn’t use plug-ins installed for IE)
  • Shockwave You may be asked to install Shockwave on your machine to facilitate your online training. Follow the steps to install Shockwave making sure to uncheck the box that states “Install Yahoo Tool bar”.
  • Active X If at some point you may be asked to install Active X, please do so.
  • Adobe Reader If you cannot open and read your transcript you will need to go to www.adobe.com and download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader.


High Speed Broadband Internet Connection is Required
    Recommended Internet speeds:
    • Download speed of at least 25 mbps
    • Upload speed of at least 3 mbps
    • Ping response of less than 100ms

Coming in July 2023.  Students can enroll and study at their own pace.

Students enrolled in a structured Online workforce development program are required to engage in an academically related activity every week. If a student is absent for 10 consecutive calendar days, the students’ enrollment in the program will be terminated. A student whose enrollment is terminated for violation of the attendance policy may not re-enroll until the next cohort starts that offers the same course the student was scheduled. This provision does not circumvent the approved refund policy.

Certification Information

The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) credential is awarded by the private certification organization, American Medical Technologists (AMT), and taken in addition to any state licensing or regulatory requirements.

The purpose of this exam is to demonstrate entry-level competence in basic dental assisting duties; it does not qualify candidates for any advanced procedures or expanded functions in the role of dental assisting.

PLEASE NOTE: This program does not qualify for Dental Assistant licensing in the state of Montana. Each state’s dental board implements rules and regulations for delegating legally allowable duties to dental assistants. Passing the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) exam only conveys authority to perform these duties in those states that recognize these exams or this certification as meeting state dental assisting requirements.
